Artist Statement
I currently live and create on the north shore of Long Island. I was born in Dublin, Ireland and spent my childhood surrounded by the brilliant colors of the Irish landscape and sky. My father was an aerospace engineer and took a job with Grumman so we relocated to Long Island when I was in my teens. My mother was a painter and a writer who influenced and encouraged my direction into the visual arts.
Over the years I have explored many different art forms, from drawing, printmaking, ceramics, sculpture, weaving and more. I always felt that I would end up painting but it took some loss of family during the pandemic to realize that there is really only now, it was time to begin oil painting.
The amazing skies over the north shore, present the most stunning of images which have greatly influenced my current series of oil paintings. Color and its vibrational energy and the interrelationships of color is currently the subject of my work. Contemporary realism is my chosen genre and I make a deliberate choice to create representational images that are familiar. I also enjoy the curiosity of depicting fabric and pattern in my work and think they serve as an excellent vehicle for creating art. I am also interested in composition and personal perspective.
I like to look at amazing or colorful skies and become completely involved in the forms, shadows, colors and vastness. When we create and look at art we transcend our subjective worlds and experience it on a deeper, more elevated and emotional level. It connects us in our experiences.
